physical appearance

The genedrize is a stranger of average size, with six limbs and a dramatic gradient of bright blue to red along its body. Approximately 51% of genedrize are blue-headed, while the remaining 49% are red-headed. Its vivid skin glows slightly in the dark, and its blank white eyes are highly reflective. Its skin has the texture and friction of silicone rubber, its flesh of the same consistency. However, its internal cavity is filled with a brightly glowing, gaseous substance that does not leave the confines of its body for the entirety of its life, even when an opening is made. In darkness, the bright blue-and-red glow of this internal smoke, billowing in its form, beams out from any scars or holes in the genedrize's flesh1.

The genedrize's rubbery skin is fairly durable, but with enough force, can be punctured or cut. Though the genedrize's regenerative ability is enthusiastic, fully healing wounds within the course of a few hours, it also scars dramatically, its scar tissue translucent and faded in color. It seems to be entirely unaffected by extremes of temperature, with neither direct flame nor sub-zero temperatures having any effect.

1. I've never seen one like it. Its colors are so striking. I found it in the basement, and there was a big scar in its side. Light was pouring out of it. I struggle to call strangers beautiful at the best of times, but...damn, it was beautiful.

Katashi, Kei. On the Nature of the Colorspaces, 32

Its voice resembles a series of sine chirps, mangled in an audio-editing program- skipping, gaining or losing quality, and jumping up and down in pitch randomly.

environment and generation

The genedrize is only capable of generating in cities with a strong connection to either of the hells, or a low bluespace/redspace offset2. Beyond this, it has no environmental preference, and can appear anywhere in a city so long as either or both of these conditions are met. Though it is capable of generating anywhere, the genedrize tends to gravitate towards either very high or very low locations after its generation, being just as likely to be found on the tops of skyscrapers as it is in the deepest basements. Genedrize who choose to go towards neither location are uncommon, but not unheard of.

2. I bring this up because I saw these guys showing up as kind of a litmus test for your city. If your offset on either one of the colorspaces- bluespace or redspace- is low enough, genedrize will show up. It's good to keep one eye open, because a colorspace offset being low enough can make really weird things start to happen. Think of 'em like an indicator species.

The genedrize's generation is a gradual process, swirling into existence from a cloud of iridescent smoke. Its shape forms from the mist and its skin forms to contain it, in a process that takes about 45 seconds. The genedrize briefly surveys its environment upon generating, but wastes no time in beginning its wander.

A small minority of genedrize (0.5%), known as "sacred" genedrize3, generate with brightly glowing, intangible orbs hovering over their head and the tip of their tail, their color the opposite color of the end they hover over. The appearance of these orbs has a negligible effect on the genedrize's stability (with these individuals being approximately 2.4% less stable than the norm), but a sacred genedrize's effect on sensitives and its environment is significantly more potent.

3. It really scared me in the moment. I looked at it and it looked at me. That thing over its head really drew my attention; I'd never seen something like that even when I encountered other ones in the past. Dunno why, but I really had a hard time taking my eyes off it...

behavior and effects

The genedrize's disposition is intelligent and observational, wandering the city as a whole or wherever they have staked out territory at an ambling, watchful pace. Though it does not seem to have a goal or purpose in its exploration, it seems highly interested in the things it sees, often pausing to observe a particular object or (especially common) stopping to stare at the sky or the floor. Whether the genedrize looks at the sky or the floor in these lapses in concentration does not seem to be connected to the genedrize's colorspace alignment, but it does not change at any point in the genedrize's life.

As the genedrize wanders, the environment around it lights up with glowing red or blue patterning and unique environmental changes based upon the colorspace it is aligned to. Blue-headed genedrize are aligned to bluespace, and red-headed genedrize, redspace. The effect of this proximity is akin to shining a blacklight onto invisible ink. A blue-headed genedrize reveals orderly, circuit-like lines on the walls, floor and ceiling around it, and occasionally reveals the presence of tunnels cutting through nearby objects (though these cannot be entered). A red-headed genedrize, on the other hand, reveals erratic, graffiti-like scrawling around it, and appears to severely distort some objects nearby it4.

4. Outside of colorspace headsets, that's the only time you're gonna get a good look at the effect. It kind of looks like when a 3D model glitches really bad and all the polygons get extruded, so it sort of ends up as, like, this...mess of triangles. It's a lot weirder to see when it's right in front of you. That's a real object and it's all blown up.

Katashi, Kei. On the Nature of the Colorspaces, 34

These patterns and distortions remain for a short time after the genedrize has passed by; an average of about 10 seconds. A sacred genedrize's effect lasts for much longer, remaining for approximately 5 minutes.

interactions with sensitives

The genedrize observes sensitives from a distance, either following or backing away as the sensitive moves in an attempt to mantain this same distance. Blue-headed genedrize are smooth and unemotive in this motion, keeping a steady pace and a level head as it moves and watches. It vocalizes little, but occasionally gestures towards tunnels or patterns. Red-headed genedrize, on the other hand, appear somewhat shy and awkward in their motions, even seeming to trip over themselves when backing up at times. A red-headed genedrize vocalizes very frequently and uses little body language.

Proximity to a genedrize causes headaches, dizziness and hallucinations, distantly similar to those seen under the effects of psycholy5. The severity of these effects varies based on the sensitive affected and the age of the genedrize, while the precise nature depends on the genedrize's alignment. A blue-headed genedrize's effects veer more into the hallucinatory side, causing more intense audio and visual hallucinations as well as lightheadedness, while a red-headed genedrize's effects are much more physical, causing a pounding headache, dizziness, nausea and vomiting.

5. I cornered one once, got a little too close to it, and boom. Right away my head felt achy and light and I felt sick to my stomach. I've had migraines before and they're something like this, but I'd say the genedrize effect is a good bit worse. The edges of my vision got covered up with these blocky blue patterns, and the circuits that seemed to follow this genedrize, I saw them everywhere now...

Katashi, Kei. On the Nature of the Colorspaces, 35

Sacred genedrize have much more intense effects that can quickly incapacitate a sensitive; seizures are not unheard of in this scenario.

aging and death

The genedrize's intelligence and serenity slowly leaves it as it ages, and by the end of its life, it is a paranoid, yet simple creature. Along with this, its effects on sensitives increase in potency while its effect on the environment fades. The death of a genedrize is a dramatic event; it cries out and vanishes with a crack of light and sound, leaving behind a dry heat, a faint iridescent mist, and a mosaic of patterns on the walls around it. Sensitives that are nearby at the moment of a genedrize's death may be severely injured or even killed; death in this manner appears identical to sudden brain trauma.

The patterns left behind by a dying genedrize fade within a day.
